Northwestel Introducing Faster Internet Speeds and More Value
Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Northwestel Internet customers will soon be getting more for their money. Beginning September 1st, Northwestel will boost the speeds and usage on its Internet packages, with no increase or change in prices to the majority of its residential packages. In addition, the price for Northwestel’s top tier Internet service will decrease while download speeds will increase to 16 Mbps. There is more good news for small business customers, as rates will go down by 40 per cent.
“We are confident that these changes are just what our customers have been waiting for,” said Paul Flaherty, Northwestel President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our customers have asked for these kinds of improvements and we’ve been listening. We’re delighted to be able to provide faster Internet services and provide more value for our customers.”
The higher speeds and increased data usage will be applied automatically to existing packages, with no need for customers to take any action. Customers who want to take advantage of the new 16 Mbps Internet speeds and price can make the switch easily by contacting Northwestel.
In addition, small business High Speed Internet rates will be reduced by nearly 40 % from $129.95 per month to $79.95 per month.

The Internet service enhancements are being made possible by a number of major improvements to Northwestel’s infrastructure and network. One significant project was the recently completed fibre optic cable link between the Yukon and southern Canada (see related news release: Northwestel Completes Construction of Fibre Link to Southern Canada). Northwestel’s network between Yellowknife and Alberta is nearly all fibre optic cable, with the exception of a digital microwave radio span across the Mackenzie River. In addition, bandwidth has been expanded between Yellowknife and Edmonton through network hardware upgrades. In Yellowknife and Whitehorse, local network improvements have enhanced the quality and speed of Internet connections.
Northwestel provides complete telecommunications solutions and entertainment services in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon, northern British Columbia and High Level, Alberta. The company’s operations span nearly 4 million square kilometres of the most remote and rugged areas of Canada.
