Northwestel Launching High Speed Internet in Aklavik
Northwestel has introduced High Speed Internet service in the Northwest Territories community of Aklavik.
The new service is already operational in the community and residents are able to subscribe at any time.
“Our goal at Northwestel is to provide northerners right across our operating area with the best possible service, no matter where they live,” said Curtis Shaw, Northwestel Vice President, Consumer and Small Business. “The introduction of this improved Internet service for the people of Aklavik is another step in that direction. Faster Internet service is one of the things that our customers have been asking for and we are pleased to respond to that customer demand with this new service launch.”
Aklavik residents are invited to a community celebration hosted by Northwestel on Monday, November 2nd, from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Aklavik Hamlet Council Chambers. Northwestel representatives will be there to provide demonstrations of the new service, offer refreshments to those in attendance and sign up new subscribers to the service.
Northwestel’s High Speed Internet service provides residents with a broadband Internet connection with speeds of up to 5 Mbps. This reliable service is available via digital subscriber line (DSL) technology.
Three packages will be available in Aklavik: DSL Lite, an introductory product perfect for casual web surfing; DSL Classic, with a faster connection suitable for downloading photos and music; and DSL Ultra, which is targeted at users who require more speed and bandwidth. Prices for DSL Internet start at $39.95 per month.
If customers wish to subscribe to the new service, they may contact Northwestel at
1-888-423-2333, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. MT. Any customers who sign up before the end of November will receive the added bonus of a discounted price on professional installation of the service.
These service improvements are part of a series of announcements being made this summer and fall, including the recent launch of broadband Internet in a number of northern communities. The same service will be launched soon in Fort Good Hope, Fort McPherson and Tuktoyaktuk. More details will be announced as they become available.
Northwestel provides complete telecommunications solutions and entertainment services in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon, northern British Columbia and High Level, Alberta. The company’s operations span nearly 4 million square kilometres of the most remote and rugged areas of Canada.
