Exciting Soccer Play at 2010 Northwestel Indoor Soccer Championships

Monday, March 29, 2010

More than 500 young athletes went home tired but happy after three days of excellent and exciting soccer play at the 2010 Northwestel Indoor Soccer Championships, held in Whitehorse over the weekend. The tournament is presented annually by the Yukon Soccer Association.

In total, 49 teams participated, including 37 from Whitehorse and 12 from smaller communities. Dawson City sent six teams, Mayo and Atlin sent two teams each, and Haines Junction and Watson Lake both sent one team each.

The teams competed in five different categories, ranging from seven and under (U7) to fifteen and under (U15).

“The kids played their hearts out,” said Johnny Nunan, Yukon Soccer Association (YSA) President. “Some of them played as many as three or four games in one day. I’m certain that both the excitement and the exhaustion ensured that every single player was very ready for bed on Sunday night! This tournament is about creating soccer-related opportunities and experiences for kids that they can value and look back on for the rest of their lives. I’d like to thank Northwestel, as well as the volunteers on the YSA board, for helping to create these positive experiences for Yukon children. I’d also like to extend my appreciation to all the soccer parents. They do so much to support the kids week in, week out. They play every role from taxi driver to dietitian to physiotherapist and everything in between. They’re the unsung heroes of Yukon soccer.”
