Northwestel Awards Scholarships to Ten Northern Students

Northwestel has awarded ten scholarships worth a total of $25,000.00 to outstanding post-secondary students from across the North. The scholarships were awarded under the 2010-2011 Northern Futures Scholarship Program.
Each student receives a $2,500.00 scholarship to assist with post-secondary studies during the 2010-11 academic year. Four of the scholarships were awarded to Aboriginal students.
“Northwestel’s Northern Futures scholarships are intended to support, encourage and motivate outstanding northern students,” said Paul Flaherty, Northwestel President and CEO. “A well-educated workforce is an important factor in continuing economic development and prosperity right across the North. Our hope is that our scholarship program will help northern students successfully complete their education and then return home to the North to work and live.”
The 2010-2011 scholarship recipients are:
Nunavut
· Zachary Cousins of Iqaluit (Aboriginal recipient) – Engineering Computer Systems – Carleton University, Ottawa
Northwest Territories
· Aimee Gauthier of Yellowknife – Engineering – Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario
· Stephen Giovanetto of Yellowknife – Engineering – University of Alberta, Edmonton
· Wesley Lines of Yellowknife (Aboriginal recipient) – Engineering – University of Alberta, Edmonton
· Stephanie Mantha of Wha Ti (Aboriginal recipient) – Business Administration – Aurora College, Fort Simpson
· Allison Minue of Fort Simpson (Aboriginal recipient) – Business Administration – Mount Royal University, Calgary, Alberta
Yukon
· Adam Henderson of Whitehorse – Business Administration – Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan
· Derek Klassen of Whitehorse – Business Administration – University of Fairbanks, Alaska
· Brittany Pearson of Whitehorse – Commerce/Accounting – Carleton University, Ottawa
· Cody Reaume of Whitehorse – Electrical Engineering – Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Calgary, Alberta
