Northwestel Sponsors National Aboriginal Day Celebrations

Northwestel is partnering with organizations in eight northern communities to assist with National Aboriginal Day and other aboriginal celebrations coming up in the next few weeks.
Northwestel is sponsoring National Aboriginal Day celebrations on June 21st in six communities in the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia, including Fort Nelson, Inuvik, Yellowknife, Hay River, Carcross and Whitehorse. In addition, Northwestel will host celebrations in Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet on Nunavut Day.

Aboriginal Day and Nunavut Day,” said Paul Flaherty, Northwestel President and Chief Executive Officer. “We believe it’s important to come together as a community to recognize and celebrate the culture and contributions of aboriginal peoples right across the North and across the country.”
In Yellowknife, Northwestel will once again sponsor the annual National Aboriginal Day fish fry organized by the North Slave Métis Alliance. It will take place from 12 noon until 4 p.m. at Sombe K’e Park (beside Yellowknife City Hall). Northwestel employees will volunteer as servers at the event.
In Inuvik, Northwestel will sponsor a fish fry at Jim Koe Park, beginning at 2 p.m. on June 21st. It’s part of National Aboriginal Day celebrations being organized by the Inuvik Native Band, the Nihtat Gwich’in Recreation Committee and the Town of Inuvik.
In Hay River, Northwestel will sponsor a golf tournament being hosted at the Hay River Golf Club by the Katlodeeche First Nation as part of its National Aboriginal Day activities.
In Fort Nelson, Northwestel’s sponsorship will assist with the Fort Nelson Aboriginal Friendship Society’s celebrations of National Aboriginal Day.
In Whitehorse, the Council of Yukon First Nations and its partners are hosting celebrations from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Shipyards Park. Northwestel will sponsor the salmon and bannock tent, where company employees will volunteer as servers.
In Carcross, Northwestel will be supporting the Carcross Tagish First Nation and its partners in hosting celebrations from Sunrise 4:28 a.m. to Sunset 11:37 p.m. at the Carcross Tagish First Nation Pavillion.
Northwestel is also organizing barbecues in both Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet to celebrate Nunavut Day on July 9th.
