Elijah Smith Elementary School

1399 Hamilton Boulevard

Whitehorse, YT

Whitehorse news media are invited to attend an event at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Elijah Smith Elementary School at 1399 Hamilton Boulevard in Whitehorse.

There will be a cheque presentation and photo opportunity with students and teachers at Elijah Smith Elementary School to celebrate the ninth successful year of Northwestel’s Directory Recycling Program. Also in attendance will be Northwestel President and CEO Paul Flaherty, Whitehorse Deputy Mayor and City Councillor Doug Graham, and Albert Van De Kraats, the Whitehorse Terminal Manager for Northwest Transport, part of the Manitoulin Group. Both the City of Whitehorse and Northwest Transport are partners in the directory recycling program.

This opportunity accompanies a news release issued on June 14, 2010, summarizing the results of the annual directory recycling program in the Yukon and northern British Columbia. This year, 28 schools earned a total of nearly $18,000.00 in donations from Northwestel by collecting more than 8,000 out-dated directories for recycling.
Elijah Smith Elementary School has participated in the directory recycling program every year since it began in 2002. This year, the school collected 680 directories, more than any other school in the Yukon or northern B.C. The school plans to use the funds for a variety of activities and programs, including field trips, prizes, pizza lunches, special functions, sports and school dances.
