View Northwestel Directory Artwork Entries Online

Friday, December 24, 2010

An online exhibit of more than thirty pieces of original northern art is available for viewing on Northwestel’s website at www.nwtel.ca. Three of the pieces will be chosen to appear on the company’s telephone directory covers for 2011-2012.

The artwork was submitted to Northwestel’s annual directory artwork competition and will be available for viewing until January 25, 2011. Twenty-three artists from Northern British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut submitted art to the contest. They can be viewed by going to the In The Community section of the Northwestel website and choosing the Directory Cover Art and 2011 Directory Cover Art Finalists.

“We were thrilled to receive an excellent and varied selection of northern artwork in our annual competition,” said Anne Kennedy, Communications Director, Northwestel. “The work depicts many aspects of our unique northern lifestyle and environment. The featured subjects include community life, traditional pursuits, wildlife, and our northern wilderness in all seasons and weather. I’m sure northerners will enjoy the chance to see this beautiful work in our online gallery.”

Three winning entries will be chosen, one each from region, to be featured on the three Northwestel directories. The selections will be announced in the new year. The winning works of art will become part of Northwestel’s corporate art collection and a limited number of reproductions will be produced and used for gifts and prizes. Each of the winning artists will be awarded $2000.00.

Northwestel has been featuring original works by northern artists on the covers of its telephone directories since 1983. This is one of the many ways in which Northwestel supports northern arts and culture. Artists are invited to begin planning now for the next directory cover art competition for the 2012-2013 directories.
