Latitude Wireless Broadens 3G Scope in Yukon

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Latitude Wireless has installed a new 3G site in the Marsh Lake area. This site is the Yukon’s first 3G wireless site outside of Whitehorse. 3G service now extends south of Whitehorse to Marsh Lake.

3G technology allows customers to fully utilize the capabilities and features of the most modern and popular handsets including the iPhone4 and the Blackberry Torch. This technology allows customers with 3G devices to take full advantage of services like mobile Internet and other data intensive applications.

“We’re very pleased to bring the speed and convenience of 3G service to the Marsh Lake area,” Curtis Shaw, General Manager of Latitude Wireless. “Latitude Wireless is expanding its wireless infrastructure to more and more areas of the Yukon. Expanding the 3G network is one more way we’re keeping Yukoners connected.”

Late last year, Latitude Wireless installed new equipment on an existing tower in Swan Haven, which has made it possible to launch 3G service in the Marsh Lake area. Service has been available since December.

This recent 3G expansion was one of several projects completed by Latitude Wireless in the last two years. As part of a separate expansion project Latitude Wireless worked with the Yukon government to expand service to five areas of Yukon - the Dawson City, Carmacks and Watson Lake Airports, Lake Laberge and in the Ibex Valley.

Customers can get information about Latitude Wireless service and check out the newest phones at the Northwestel Retail Centre on the corner of 2nd and Lambert, or at the convenient Latitude Kiosk in the Shoppers building on Main St.

Latitude Wireless is a partnership between Northwestel and the Dakwakada Development Corporation. Launched in 2006, this successful joint venture provides digital cellular service across Yukon.

Latitude Wireless service offers a wide range of features, including text-messaging, email, picture and video messaging, and a mobile Internet browser service that provides access to multiple applications such as music downloads, screensavers, games and ring-tones. The service also offers mobile web and email access for a wide range of handsets, including the popular Blackberry and Smartphone devices. Details about pricing packages, service options, phones and PDAs are available at www.latitudewireless.ca or by calling 1-866-803-2365.

Latitude Wireless customers calling each other within Yukon also enjoy free long-distance calls.
