Thursday, September 29, 2011
Northwestel launches cellular voice service in the Nunavut community of Pangnirtung on Tuesday, October 4.
"We are very excited to introduce cellular service in Pangnirtung," said Paul Flaherty, President and CEO of Northwestel. "We hope that residents of the community will enjoy having this new access to a cellular and mobile Internet service that is comparable in quality and price to all other cellular providers in Canada."
Pangnirtung is the eighth community in Nunavut to receive cell service, joining Arviat, Baker Lake, Cambridge Bay, Kugluktuk, Pond Inlet, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit. Northwestel continues to seek partnerships with local governments and Aboriginal organizations to expand its services to more remote communities in northern Canada.
Northwestel’s service includes a wide range of features, such as: picture and video messaging, and a mobile browser that enables customers to download ring-tones and access screensavers and games. Northwestel also offers remote web and email access for a wide range of handsets including popular Smartphone devices.
Northwestel cellular services are delivered on the CDMA platform, which is compatible with the Bell, Telus, Aliant, SaskTel and MTS networks. Customers are able to roam seamlessly on all other Canadian CDMA networks.
Northwestel invites Pangnirtung residents to an open house on Tuesday, October 4, at the Northern Store, the company's local dealer, to mark the launch of the new service. Northwestel employees will be on site until Thursday October 7 to demonstrate new phones, including Smart phones, and offer special "all-in-one" packages that include a limited edition collectors' box, featuring work by local artist David Kilabuk.
Residents of Pangnirtung may obtain information or sign up for the new service by visiting the Northern Store, their local dealer, or by calling 867-473-8935. They may also call Northwestel directly at 1-888-423-2333.
Northwestel provides complete telecommunications solutions and entertainment services in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon, northern British Columbia and High Level, Alberta. The company’s operations span nearly 4 million square kilometres of the most remote and rugged areas of Canada.
