Voice Mail FAQ
How can I change the number of times the phone rings before an incoming call is forwarded to Voice Mail?
Call 1-888-423-2333 to change the ring programming on your line.
What if I forget my password?
Call 1-888-423-2333 to reset your password. There is a one-time charge of $9.95 for resetting unknown passwords.
What happens to incoming calls if I subscribe to Call Waiting and Voice Mail?
If you are already on the phone, and get a second incoming call, you will hear a beep. If you choose not to answer the second incoming call, it will automatically forward to Voice Mail.
If I have only one line, how do I set up my fax machine to answer before Voice Mail?
You will need to reset the number of rings on your fax machine to ensure it picks up before the call is forwarded to Voice Mail. You may also call 1-888-423-2333 to change the programmed number of rings before an incoming call is forwarded to Voice Mail.
If you have a fax machine, consider subscribing to Smart Ring. Smart Ring allows you to have two numbers programmed on one line, each with a distinctive ring. With Smart Ring, you could determine whether an incoming call is a fax, or someone trying to reach you.
Can I change the prompting on my Voice Mail so callers can leave a message immediately, rather than waiting for the menu prompts or listening to my recording?
There is no way to completely turn off the prompting; however, you can change the speed and extent of the prompts, by doing the following:
- Go to Menu 4 - Personal Options
- Go to Menu 2 - Administrative Options
- Press 3 to change prompt level:
- Press 1 for the standard prompts
- Press 2 for the extended prompts
- Press 3 for the rapid prompts.
In addition, callers may choose to skip the prompts and your message. Once the caller hears your recording, they may press the pound (#) key to skip the prompts and go directly to leaving their message.
Please note: The option to change your prompts, as outlined above, is not available in Iqaluit.
Why does the light on my phone set not flash when I have a message?
Your phone set may have a light but the purpose is not for Message Waiting. In general if the phone has a display and is equipped with a red light, Visual Message Waiting should work.
Why do I hear beeping instead of dial tone when I pick up the receiver of my phone?
The fast beeping may indicate one of the following:
- There is a voice message waiting in your Voice Mail box
- If you subscribe to Call Forwarding and have forwarded your line, you will hear a busy call forward reminder (fast beeping) when you pick up the receiver.
Even though I am using a push button phone set, nothing happens when I press the numbers on the keypad, or the system doesn't recognize the numbers I enter.
If you press a number on the keypad, and it sounds like a rotary dial phone, the phone is either set to "pulse", or is not equipped for Touch Tone™ dialing. Check your phone set to see if there is a "pulse/tone" switch, and ensure the button is switched to "tone".
Sometimes I call into the Voice Mail system and the recording indicates I have a new message - even if it is a message I have already listened to. Why does the system indicate that I have a new message when I have already listened to it?
If a message is not played entirely before you hang up, or if you exit the system by pressing the star (*) button while in the middle of a message, the system does not consider it "heard". If you do not wish the system to consider it a new message, you must direct the system to either delete (by pressing 7) or archive (by pressing 9) the message.
How do I access Voice Mail from another location or another community?
You can access your Voice Mail box from anywhere, as long as you are using a Touch Tone™ phone. If you are calling from within the same community, simply dial the 7-digit access number as you would any other local number. If you are calling from another community and long distance charges apply, dial the main access number as you would any long distance number (e.g., 1+ (area code) + access number). You will be prompted to enter your mailbox number and then your password.
