First-ever gigabit home internet service launches in Yellowknife and Whitehorse

For immediate release

Whitehorse, YT, Dec. 9, 2025 – Northwestel today announced a major connectivity milestone for Northern Canada: Residential customers in Whitehorse and Yellowknife can now enjoy internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) with unlimited monthly usage. In these capital cities, 1 Gbps is the fastest internet available on the market.

Northwestel is introducing this new plan at the same rate as its previous top-tier 700 Mbps package, giving high-performance customers the benefit of 1 Gbps at no additional cost. For customers currently at the popular 500 Mbps level, they can upgrade to 1 Gbps for only $10. Subscribers to the new package will also receive one year of complimentary Northwestel TV Plus – App Premium.

This achievement builds on years of strategic investment. The Canada North Fibre Loop, operational for just over a year, has transformed network resilience. Maintenance activities that once meant downtime now happen seamlessly, with traffic rerouted while our dedicated crews complete work. When wildfires threatened fibre lines this summer, proactive investments in fire smarting paid off – keeping services live and ensuring Northerners stayed connected.

“Our priority is to deliver the best network in Northern Canada – for Northerners, by Northerners. We’re building on this momentum and have our sights set on bringing gigabit speeds to fibre communities, expanding our fibre network into more areas of Northern BC and surrounding areas of Whitehorse, Yukon.”  – Nathan Pullar, Vice President of Network Technology

Northwestel invites customers to sign up for the new service to feel for themselves the benefits gigabit speeds can have – from more streaming, faster download speeds, and higher quality video calls to cutting-edge AI applications. Customers can order online at nwtel.ca, call 1 (888) 423-2333, or visit a Northwestel store near them.
