We’re upgrading Granger to the latest fibre technology

Fast connectivity is coming to the North

Northwestel is investing $3 million to bring you access to the fastest internet in the North, with speeds up to 1 Gig.

To bring fibre to your home, we need your consent to complete the necessary work on your property.

Giving consent does not mean you have to subscribe to an internet plan or other services, it simply ensures your home is ready for fibre when you want it.

Your current technology will eventually be phased out as fibre-to-the-home becomes the new standard.

Our Northwestel TV Plus service will replace traditional cable TV and can be bundled with an Internet plan of your choice.

Rest assured, reliable home phone services will continue to be offered over the fibre technology.

How we're upgrading your home

To complete the upgrade, we’ll be using methods designed to minimize disruption. Work will take place on roads, sidewalks, and residential properties.

After your consent, the contractor will drill a service duct to the side of your house. The contractor or a Northwestel representative will explain the implications of the project as it pertains to your property before any work is performed.

Technicians will require access to your home later to connect your existing services to the new infrastructure. We will get in touch with you when we are ready for that exciting next step.

This is a simple overview of how fibre infrastructure will flow from our Central Office (the brains of the operation) throughout a neighbourhood and to homes.

Updates

  • August 8th: Holes in easements – Our crews are currently laying distribution fibre in the easements. We encourage the community to use caution around any holes dug for fibre installation. These holes should all be marked and covered, and we will fill them in as soon as possible. Full restoration of the area (as close to reasonably possible) will occur in 2026.

Laneway behind Hayes Crescent – We will be clearing brush and vegetation along the laneway behind Hayes Crescent (behind even-numbered houses 2 to 32) in preparation for laying distribution fibre.

  • August 4th: Crews will be setting up equipment near the First Pentecostal Church. We will be laying distribution fibre along Wilson Drive, starting at the church and heading southward.

  • June/July 2025: Crews are in the area for surveying; over the next few weeks you may notice stakes around the neighbourhood and spray paint on lawns.

Timeline

Phase 1: Surveying and consent collection

May – July 2025: Survey crews are currently working in your neighbourhood. You may notice stakes and spray paint markings around your property, these are part of the survey work to prepare for fibre installation. The markings show the easement boundaries where the new fibre lines will go.

Phase 2: Construction

August 2025: Construction starting in Area 1

Important update:

We have completed a detailed survey of the Granger neighbourhood. Based on our findings, we must split the construction over a 2-year period. As a result, some addresses are eligible for a fibre upgrade this year, and others will be in 2026. We will complete as many homes as possible before the ground freezes and we can no longer lay infrastructure.

Check your inboxes! We have emailed all our Granger customers to let them know if their address will be eligible for fibre services this year. Didn’t get an email? Call us at 1 (888) 423-2333 to find out if your address is eligible this year.

You may have seen flags and spray paint markings on lawns. These indicate easement boundaries where fibre infrastructure will be placed. Please leave these where they are placed. They will be collected later this fall.

There will soon be equipment laying the distribution fibre along Wilson Drive. There may be some impact to traffic flow while this work is completed. Signage will always be present.

If your address is eligible for a fibre upgrade this year, we will contact you to discuss when our crews will be ready to get your property fibre-ready.

Due to the complexity of this project, unforeseen delays may occur, which can potentially impact on our schedule and limit the number of households we can upgrade during the construction season. As we can only lay the infrastructure while the ground is thawed, we will work diligently to upgrade as many homes as possible in Granger and address challenges as they arise.

FAQ

What is the difference between property lines and easements?
  • Property lines define the legal boundaries of your land, based on official surveys and legal descriptions.

  • Easements are designated areas within those boundaries that allow utility companies access to install or maintain infrastructure.
Why are there stakes and spray paint on my lawn
  • These are part of the survey work to prepare for fibre installation. The markings show the easement boundaries where the new fibre lines will go.
How do I get up-to-date project information?
  • Visit www.nwtel.ca/granger for up-to-date information. We recommend bookmarking this page and referring to it at least once a week.

  • We will also be contacting customers periodically throughout the project via e-mail and mail on any important next steps. Contact us to ensure your e-mail is on file!
How do I give consent?
Why won’t the whole neighbourhood be upgraded this year?
  • We have completed a detailed survey of the Granger neighbourhood. Based on our findings, we must split the construction over a 2-year period. This will ensure we can do the highest-quality work possible within the remaining build season.
I’m in Area 2 & 3 and have already consented. When will I get service?
  • We will contact you in 2026 to reconfirm your consent and ensure there has been no change to property ownership. Once that is complete, we will contact you when our crews are ready to get your property fibre-ready.
What will happen to my property?
  • Northwestel’s primary method of bringing fibre to your home is by using discrete horizontal drilling, which is the most minimally invasive method available on the market today.
Why upgrade now?
  • Northwestel will cover the installation cost, which is currently valued at up to $1,500.

  • Access to the fastest internet in the North with speeds up to 1 Gig.

  • A fibre-to-the-home connection can make your property more attractive to buyers.

  • It will keep you connected as cable services are phased out.
What services will be available?
  • TV, phone and internet services are all available over fibre technology.

Only the property owner can complete this form.
