Northern Futures Scholarship

Invest in your future. Stay in the North.

Northern Futures is our flagship scholarship and career entry program for northern students. It combines financial support, priority access to internship and employment opportunities, and a clear pathway into a future career with us. We designed this program to identify and invest in students who want to build, lead, and stay in the North. 

What you receive:

  • $4,000 toward your post-secondary education.
  • Priority consideration for internship and early-career opportunities at Northwestel.
  • Access to mentorship and career connections.

Who can apply:

  • Northern residents within our operating area: Yukon, NWT, Nunavut, Northern BC, and Northern Alberta.
  • Enrolled full-time in a two-year diploma or four-year degree program.
  • Studying Engineering (Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Structural/Civil), Telecommunications, Electrical, Computer Sciences, Commerce, Business, Marketing, Communications, or Human Resources.
  • At least half of all scholarships are awarded to Indigenous students every year.

Who is eligible to apply?

You must be a northern resident within Northwestel’s operating area (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Northern BC, or Northern Alberta) enrolled full-time in a two-year diploma or four-year degree program in Engineering, Telecommunications, Electrical, Computer Sciences, Commerce, Business, Marketing, Communications, or Human Resources.

How many scholarships are available each year?

Six scholarships of $4,000 each are awarded annually. At least half go to Indigenous students every year.

Can the scholarship lead to a job at Northwestel?

Yes. Scholarship recipients are prioritized for internships and early-career opportunities at Northwestel. While a position is not guaranteed, recipients are actively considered when opportunities arise and are connected with our talent acquisition team after receiving their award.

What documents do I need to apply?

Proof of northern residency, proof of ancestry if applying for an Indigenous-designated scholarship, your most recent transcript, an acceptance letter from your post-secondary institution, an introduction letter or video, and a current photo for media use.

Internship Program

Real work. Real investment. Real connections.

Our Internship Program places northern students and graduates in paid roles across Northwestel. You will work on real projects tied to our strategic priorities, be mentored by people leaders, and present your work to senior management. This is a meaningful, hands-on career-entry experience offered year-round, designed to help both you and us explore what a long-term future here could look like.

What you get:

  • A career mentor or peer buddy outside of your hiring manager.
  • A formal return signal - we stay in touch about opportunities that fit when you are ready.

Is the program available year-round or only in summer?

The program is available year-round, not just in summer. We match students and graduates to opportunities as they arise across our teams.

What kind of work will I be doing?

You will be assigned a defined project tied to Northwestel’s strategic priorities. Real work that contributes to the organization, not just administrative tasks. You will also have a career mentor and at least two touchpoints with senior leadership.

Can I do an internship and apply for the scholarship at the same time?

Yes. The two programs are designed to work together. Scholarship recipients are prioritized for internship opportunities, and current interns are encouraged to apply for the scholarship.

Can an internship lead to a full-time role at Northwestel?

Yes. The internship is designed as a pre-hire experience. We stay in touch with interns about opportunities that fit when they are ready to join us full time.

STEP 1

Collect copies of the following documents to be uploaded to the online application:

  • A proof of ancestry (i.e. photocopy of status card, beneficiary identification or letter) – this is only necessary if you are applying for one of the Indigenous student scholarships.
  • A proof of northern residency (i.e. driver’s license, utility bill, health care card, proof of vehicle insurance (must include address)).
  • A copy of your acceptance letter from post-secondary or educational institute.
  • A copy of your most recent transcript (i.e. high school, college or university).
  • A current photo for media release in JPEG format (i.e. headshot or school photo).

STEP 2

Write (500-1000 words) or record (4-8 minutes) a personal introduction about yourself to be uploaded to the online application. Review the application guidelines for more information.

STEP 3

Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge are recommended for the online application. Internet Explorer is not supported.
