Northwestel announces $3 million investment to upgrade Granger to full fibre-to-the-home internet technology and brings 1 Gbps speeds.

Whitehorse, YT, May 5th, 2025 - Northwestel is upgrading its infrastructure in Granger to full fibre-to-the-home internet. By replacing aging underground infrastructure with the best network technology available, residents of Granger will have access to faster, more reliable internet, and up to 1 Gbps download and upload speeds.

Construction for this $3 million project, which is fully funded by Northwestel, is set to begin this summer. Northwestel is hosting a community meeting at the Elijah Smith Elementary School multi-purpose room on May 7th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to share more details about the project and how community members can engage.

Using the latest innovations and minimally invasive installation techniques like micro-trenching and directional drilling, Northwestel will install fibre directly to customers’ homes. The cost of installation, a value estimated at $1,500 for this significant technology upgrade, will be covered by Northwestel this year. To connect to the new technology, homeowners must complete an online agreement form at www.nwtel.ca/granger.

“We hope the residents of Granger join us on May 7th so we can share more details about how this project will bring the North’s fastest Internet and best network technology to their homes, up to 1 Gbps speeds. Our local team will be there to answer any questions and get people signed up,” says Curtis Shaw, President of Northwestel.

Northwestel is bringing 1 Gbps download speeds to fibre-powered communities across Northern Canada, either fibre-to-the-home or fibre-to-the-neighbourhood. The first communities and neighbourhoods to receive this speed improvement will be Atlin, BC and Granger, Yukon.
