Northwestel continues 40th anniversary celebration with support for NWT Disabilities Society

October 25, 2019
Yellowknife, NWT -
Northwestel employees gave back to the community with some good-natured scares at this weekend’s Halloween Hootenanny event in Yellowknife. Volunteers from Northwestel donated their time to help with the family-friendly event and capped off the night with a $4000 donation to the NWT Disabilities Society.

In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Northwestel has been giving back to the communities it serves. Earlier this year, the company made similar donations to northern non-profit organizations in Nunavut and Yukon. Northwestel President Curtis Shaw notes that communications in the North have evolved at a tremendous pace over the past 4 decades.

“We’re celebrating this milestone by saying thank you to the communities we serve,” says Shaw. “After 40 years, we are still so proud to be working together to build a stronger North that helps people connect. I want to say thank you to our employees, to our partners, and to our customers.”

NWT Disabilities Council Executive Director Denise McKee was on-hand for the Hootenanny event and accepted the special donation from Northwestel’s group of volunteers.

“The NWT Disabilities Council is excited to join in Northwestel’s 40th anniversary celebration,” says McKee. “Northwestel is a longstanding partner to the Disabilities Council through its support for programs such as the Day and Sobering Centre and now its Children’s Programs via our Annual Benefit. We thank Northwestel for their continued support, working together to make inclusive and stronger communities throughout the NWT.”

“Many of our more than 500 northern employees spend their time volunteering with local community groups,” Shaw explained. “In celebration of our 40th anniversary, Northwestel will match our employees’ volunteer time with donations toward the group they volunteer with. It’s just one way that we want to give back and say thanks.”

Incorporated as a northern telephone service provider in 1979, Northwestel now serves more than 90 northern communities with solutions such as high-speed Internet, digital TV, distance e-learning, 911 capability, and a range of business telecommunications services.
