What to do during a service disruption
If there is a service disruption affecting home phone and internet services, it is important for our customers to know how to reach emergency services. This page outlines best practices to help you stay connected and safe.
- Try calling 9-1-1. Depending on your location and the timing of the disruption, your call may go through.
- Try using a landline. Depending on your location and the type of disruption occurring, landlines may still be operational if cellular and internet networks are down.
- Try using a satellite phone. If your internet and cellular networks are disrupted, satellite phones can be used to make calls. Alternatively, certain mobile phones support satellite calling.
- Try using Over-the-Top (OTT) apps. If your internet service is working but cellular is disrupted, apps like WhatsApp or Signal should be able to be used to make calls.
- Approach an emergency vehicle.
- Consider driving to your nearest health centre or RCMP detachment.
- If you don’t have a satellite phone available, check if your mobile phone supports satellite or Wi-Fi calling and that Wi-Fi calling is enabled.
- Ensure location services are enabled on your mobile phone for emergency responders.
- Visit nwtel.ca/outages or facebook.com/nwtelsupport for real-time updates.
- Call 1 (888) 423-2333 and listen to recorded messages or speak to a representative.
- Monitor local government and RCMP social media accounts for emergency updates and/or instructions.
- Tune in to local radio stations for emergency updates and/or instructions.
