Providing high-speed Internet in every Nunavut community

Northwestel Nunavut customers can now get faster Internet thanks to the completion of the Tamarmik Nunaliit project. Named after the Inuktitut phrase for “every community,” our goal was to provide better Internet across Nunavut, in every community.

Building the network

With $49.9 million in funding from the Government of Canada, we were able to build new satellite earth stations and network hubs in each of Nunavut’s 25 communities.

By connecting the network to Telesat’s new satellite, the Telstar 19 VANTAGE, Nunavut customers now get faster download speeds and 20 times more Internet capacity than with the old satellite network.

Bringing the network home

Residential Nunavut customers can now choose a 15 Mbps Internet package. The new package is three times faster with double the monthly usage of the old DSL Internet 2 package at a lower price.

Our national partner, Bell Mobility, has also provided 4G wireless mobile service to all Nunavut communities. Now, Nunavut residents can get the same rates, packages, and mobile devices that Bell offers across its national network.

The Tamarmik Nunaliit network provides the backbone for the Government of Nunavut education, health care, and essential service delivery in every Nunavut community.

Small business owners can use online-based tools to help run their services and stores. Internet Service Providers (ISP) can also connect to the network at low wholesale rates. This creates more options for customers when selecting an ISP.
