Northwestel connects to new fibre line, bringing faster internet speeds to Tuktoyaktuk

For immediate release

Yellowknife, NWT, Oct. 28, 2025 – Northwestel has announced that faster internet speeds and a new TV service are now available to homes and businesses in Tuktoyaktuk. Residents can now access download and upload speeds of up to 700 Megabits per second (Mbps), while businesses can benefit from speeds of up to 750 Mbps. The community also now has access to Northwestel TV Plus, their source for top sports and entertainment content – live and on demand.

Tuktoyaktuk received a major upgrade last year when Northwestel introduced in-community fibre infrastructure. This improved speeds from 15 Mbps over basic DSL connections to 50 Mbps with unlimited monthly usage. Now, Northwestel has connected that infrastructure to the Government of Northwest Territories’ new fibre line running from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk, unlocking even greater performance for the community.

“We’re excited to bring this upgrade to Tuktoyaktuk, one of the Northwest Territories’ northernmost communities, situated at the edge of the Arctic Ocean,” said Curtis Shaw, President of Northwestel. “Delivering modern internet technology to rural and remote communities across Northern Canada provides access to the global economy and supports the North’s growing role in Arctic sovereignty.

”Northwestel is offering special incentives for returning home internet customers who are switching back from alternate providers. Eligible customers can receive:

  • Up to a $50 credit per month for six months on any unlimited internet plan
  • Waived installation fees
  • TV Plus Lite + Crave included for up to six months
  • This offer represents a total value of up to $756.89. Customers can learn more about eligibility at https://www.nwtel.ca/reconnect
