Shooting for the stars in Rankin Inlet
Rankin’s hockey camp takes a holistic approach to building tomorrow’s all-stars
For lead instructor David Clarke, every two-minute drill and every scrimmage is an opportunity to build hockey skills and also life skills. For him, that’s the secret recipe behind the award-winning Northwestel Rankin Rock Hockey Camp
“Rankin Rock Hockey Camp makes better people – not just better players” states Clark.
Just as much development happens on-ice, as off. Kids work on goal setting and how to be leaders in their communities. They learn how to boost personal wellness and self-confidence.
Over 200 kids hit the ice across the Kivalliq
The Northwestel Rankin Rock Hockey Camp is an annual hockey school for kids aged 3 – 18. The camp is based in Rankin Inlet and travels around the Kivalliq region of Nunavut.
For 5 days in October, more than 200 boys and girls hit the ice to work on their hockey skills for the upcoming season. And while youth hockey can be a major expense for northern families, the camp aims to be affordable. That’s where Northwestel was able to help.
In 2020, we announced a three-year partnership with Rankin Inlet Recreation Department. This partnership will see $30,000 go towards the Northwestel Rankin Rock Hockey Camp.
Sara Tomson, Community Investment Manager at Northwestel, is excited to partner with the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet. "We're building on what David has accomplished with the hockey camp," she says. “Rankin is a hockey town. The Kivalliq kids deserve the same opportunities to learn and be active as the rest of the north. With this support, more kids will have the chance to take part in the camp and learn new skills.”
Supporting community initiatives across the North
At Northwestel, we’re always working to make our communities stronger. One way we do that is by supporting community groups that focus on health and mental wellness, the arts, youth, and indigenous culture.
That’s why we jumped at the chance to help northern kids get active on the ice and in the classroom.
Each year Northwestel contributes more than $600,000 for non-profit community groups and projects. If your organization is planning an event or initiative that will benefit your community, we invite you to apply for sponsorship.
